Next Generation 9-1-1 GIS Resources

Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) is the next step in the evolution of the 9-1-1 system originally developed over 50 years ago. It migrates 9-1-1 from analog technology intended for wireline phones, to an all IP-based architecture capable of communicating with any network connected device. Of particular importance to local governments and GIS professionals that maintain GIS data for 9-1-1 is the transition from using MSAG and ALI tabular databases to GIS databases for 9-1-1 call location and routing. In NG9-1-1, GIS data are used in real-time within the 9-1-1 call flow for all location validation, call routing and mapping. As a result, it is essential that GIS data be complete, accurate, and up-to-date before being used within a NG9-1-1 system.

This webpage is intended to be clearinghouse for GIS-related NG9-1-1 information and resources for Montana.

GIS Data

The following GIS layers are required for NG9-1-1 location validation, call routing, and dispatch:

  • Road centerlines
  • Site/Structure Address Points
  • PSAP boundaries
  • Emergency services boundaries (separate layers for law, fire, and EMS)
  • Provisioning boundaries

Below are some of the strongly recommended GIS layers for NG9-1-1, and may aid in call taking and dispatch:

  • Street name alias table
  • State boundary
  • County boundaries
  • Incorporated municipality boundaries
  • Unincorporated community boundaries
  • Neighborhood community boundaries
