Success Stories

Perhaps the most important measure of success is patron use of MSDI data. Below we cite specialized uses and additional successes in the form of stewardship activities, reports, and the like.

The Montana Geographic Names database and/or the federal GNIS have been used for:

  • Montana Place Names, Alzada to Zortman—provided the official spelling of all the places in this book by the Montana Historical Society and the place locations for the maps in the book and on the Montana Place Names Companion web site.
  • National Center for Landscape Fire Analysis—enabled the creation of the Montana Wildland Fire Base Map application using common and alternate place names.
  • Montana Highway Map—served as the source data for place names on this map.
  • Enables geographic searches by place names in many online applications.
